Imagine being able to reach 1000s of business people for the fraction of the cost associated with general advertising. Well now you can use online networking platforms dedicated to businesses.

Many online platforms have dedicated areas where business people can advertise their services for free once they are a paying member. In Ecademy we have Marketplace which was a lot more powerful when the adverts were shown on the front page than it is now.

The best way to start on these sites is to participate in the discussion on the blogs page and slowly work your way towards advertising your wares in their marketplace. There is nothing worse than to join a site, plaster it with adverts for a few weeks and then leave never to be heard of again!

The worst thing you can do is to advertise your business in areas that are designated for blogging only. In Ecademy we have the Blogs area where it is OK to talk about business and non business related issues but is frowned upon by the members when they create what is known as a “blogvert” – in essence this is a shameless plug which makes almost no attempt at hiding the advert for their products.

Most of these sites promote “soft selling “as opposed to “hard selling” tactics.

In a nutshell what this means is that when you join do not blast your proposition to each and every member but rather try and entice them into asking about your business and what you can do for them. Do not be too pushy or manipulative. Realise that most people who join these platforms have also got businesses and that they will be trying to make contacts with potential buyers as well.

I believe in the theory of random connections. Basically what I mean by this is that one should not purely base their networking on the basis of potential business but rather focus on making decent connections and contacts. Strive to help other people and you never know who might in turn return the favour… if not now maybe in many years to come.

The art of online networking is to not to expect too much too quickly. The benefits will accrue over time and many years. Some people make the mistake of trying online networking for a few weeks and then giving up because they did not achieve any positive results. It takes time to build trust amongst other members especially the long serving ones who have seen many new people come and go.

I first tried my hand at online networking in June 2006 and quickly realised that normal rules of business do not apply. The best way to enjoy yourself on these types of platforms is to try and make friends. Business will come later… and rest assured it will come if you participate in the blogs and clubs.

Be enthusiastic and helpful, listen and join in the discussions but beware… do not let online networking take over from normal day to day business chores that still have to be carried out. It is far too easy to change networking to notworking!

Do you know any other platforms that allow businesses to advertise their wares? How has your experience been so far of business networking platforms? Have you got any tips for “newbies”?

The networking event is over and like many business professionals, you have a ton of business cards and great leads from your networking function. Is your job done? What is the next step to building relationships? What can you do to get the most of your networking endeavors? How can you follow up and make a significant and productive impact? Listed below are key tips that any entrepreneur or business professional can use to develop great relationships and properly connect with their business counterparts for networking success.

Point of Contact

After receiving business cards and contact information from your colleagues, follow up within three days. Three days is the exact time needed to stay fresh on your contact’s mind. It also allows you to have some time to properly prepare an email, phone call or letter/correspondence to your business counterpart. If you decide to contact your business counterpart over three days of your meeting, you run the risk of losing that potential contact. Your business colleague will be less likely to remember you or the conversation or connection that you shared. They may also have misplaced or lost your contact info, if they did not already contact you. And they may be busy with work, family, career or school and will not have enough time to contact you. Do not allow much time to lapse when following up after meeting your contacts.

Set up A Meeting

After you have contacted your business counterpart, make it a point to schedule a follow up meeting. This is a great opportunity to build on your pre-mature relationship and find effective ways of conducting business. The meeting should be within two weeks of meeting your business counterpart. Make sure that if you are initiating the meeting, it is beneficial for both parties. You can suggest to meet your counterpart in their office or your office if it is convenient. Or, you can meet at a restaurant for breakfast or lunch. You can also choose a coffee shop, bookstore or cafe that is suitable for the both of you. Since you are initiating the meeting, it is only polite that you cover the tab. If your counterpart insists on paying their portion, that is perfectly fine.

Prepare for the Meeting

Now, that you have set up a meeting or one on one with your business counterpart, it is imperative that you prepare for the meeting or event. You should ask your counterpart to send information about themselves and their company so that you can familiarize yourself with their business, company, services or brand. Another good idea is to visit their website and learn about their business culture, organizational management, history/background and clientele/customers. This can give you great insight on how you can work together or assist your business counterpart. Also, identify key issues or solutions that can benefit your colleague. Brainstorm and create questions on how you can grow or assist them in their business.

A Day Before the Meeting

Once you have set up a meeting, done your research and are prepared for the meeting or event, make sure to confirm the meeting a day in advance. If there are any changes in time or venue let your counterpart know ahead of time as a form of respect. Also encourage your counterpart to bring brochures, pamphlets or additional material about their company, organization or services. Following up the day before and showing initiative, will increase your credibility and professionalism with your business counterpart.

The colors are true to life, the HiDef is great and the overall picture quality is wonderful. This was our first major Amazon online purchase and we were cautiously optomistic about buying our new TV online; however, we priced the same TV at local dealers and big box stores and as we saved 00 over the cheapest local store we decided to buy using Amazon since no matter who we bought from the TV would have to be shipped here so why not try Amazon. Delivery was faster than expected and came off without a problem at all. It was all in all a very smooth, pain free experience; the way things should be. The vendor the TV came from was extremely friendly, cooperative and answered all of my questions. They shipped it to us at no additional charge, and the TV was packaged and crated extremely well. Sharp: 65SE94U The “Special Edition” AQUOS SE94U Series sets a new standard for large-screen flat-panel LCD TVs. With full HD 1080p resolution, dramatically enhanced black level and an elegant “cornerstone” design with space-saving slim bezel design and thin profile, the SE94 Series produces a breathtaking picture quality that is second to none. The LC-65SE94U utilizes the next generation of Sharp’s proprietary Advanced Super View/Black TFT Panel, providing 27,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio and 4ms response time, as well as 120Hz frame rate conversion for the ultimate in fast-motion image processing. In addition, the LC-65SE94U includes a groundbreaking AQUOS Net Feature for custom web content through an Ethernet jack. The LC-65SE94U is an HDTV with built-in ATSC/QAM/NTSC tuners and includes 3 HDMI inputs that are compatible with 1080p signals. The LC-65SE94U features a unique textured black cabinet with detachable, recessed bottom-mounted speakers, and the included table stand easily removes for wall mounting applications.

Fulfilling Your Responsibilities – Read any training materials provided and attend all training for new members as soon as possible. Be proactive from the first day and make sure you understand and are taking advantage of every option provided by the organization both at the local and regional levels.

The 4 R’s – are your primary responsibilities to your chapter and your fellow members and regardless of what anyone else does, make sure that you live up to these responsibilities.

Regular attendance – Never let your seat be empty. Attend every meeting possible, and when you cannot be there, make sure you send a substitute to fill your seat – either a member of your business or someone from the substitute list provided by the networking organization.

Regular referrals – The single most important responsibility you have as a member is to bring referrals for other members. It is easy to generate referrals if you know how and you do, so bring as many referrals as possible to every meeting. If the organization you joined recognizes activities like visiting other chapters and meeting with other members, be sure to do these things as well, but also make sure you generate qualified leads for your fellow members, especially those who are in a position to generate referrals for you.

Recruitment – Invite several guests to every meeting. It usually takes eight to ten invitations to get one visitor, so if you invite two or three to every meeting, you should have a guest every other month. Invite only people to whom you would feel comfortable sending a referral. Pick people whom you feel will be strong productive members. Ask the question, “Would you like more business?” A positive response creates the opportunity to invite them to your local chapter meeting.

Righteous Treatment of Those Referred – Go above and beyond your normal efforts to make sure that anyone referred to you gets the best possible treatment. Make sure there is never any issue about your ethical treatment of anyone even remotely associated with the organization you joined.

NETGEAR SC101 Storage Central Nice little network Storage System – Ray U. Merriam –
Had no issue getting it installed. Just popped in an extra 250 gig hard drive I had laying around. I did need to download the latest drivers and firmware. We are able to connect to it from both our XP and Vista PC. My only complaint, while minor, is that its performance is a little slower that I would have expected. However it gets the job done and my family loves being able to store and share their photos, home videos and other files. For the price it’s a good deal.
I have 4 of these in my home, each has 2 Seagate 500gig hdds, and I have yet to come into any problems at all with mine.

The first thing you need to do upon getting it is open the case, for almost all 4 shower up with either the IDE or PSU cable off, or hanging on the last needle, giving me errors left and right about how netgear 1 no longer has a letter assigned to it. Once all cables and stuff is plugged back in where it should be nice and tight, Ive had my 4 going on a year and have yet to have a single problem with any of them.

The only downside, is it is slow transfering files to it.

A plus, big plus, is that because they assign a drive letter, I can put on them my kids games that dont need a cd to run on it, and can be installed to that one drive, and all the other users can play that game too, without having to install anything, just click and play.

It also sure beats the need to keep on a dedicated, power sucking, network PC to share files with. These have little 12 watt power adapters, and they even spin down when not in use, so youre saving your hdd, from spinning 24/7, creating heat, and use when not using it so your prolonging the life of your drive and saving money.

My last problem is QC, whey theyoverlooked so many of these with the wires hardly pushed on or off, causing these GREAT storage devices to get a bad rap, but because so I was able to pick up my 4 as refurbished, for half the cost of new.

But there just are a ton of pluses when you get it working correctly, just having therm show up as a drive letter on every pc they have a driver installed for, opens a world of possibilities that you cant have making a dedicated server pc. I will never give mine up till I have the funds for a gigabit unit. Movies, games, music, all from a little tiny drive that can be used without bogging down the main pc, is probably the biggest plus with them Netgear: SC101NA With Storage Central you can add the capacity you need to store, share and back up your valuable digital content—-music, games, photos, videos, and office documents—instantly, easily, and securely, all with the simplicity of your C:drive.
The NETGEAR SC101 Storage Central is an expandable storage system that allows shared access by all computers on your network. With space for two IDE hard drives, you can set the device up to mirror each other so you have a backup of all your files in case either one fails.

Excellent Value and Easy Setup
Unlike other network-attached storage (NAS) devices, the SC101 does not come with any drives but requires you to purchase your own. This allows for considerable cost savings. Opening up the SC101 only requires turning a latch that can be done with a quarter; no tools are needed. Attach the power connectors and IDE cables, set the jumpers, and slide the drive into place, and that’s it.

After the hard drives are installed, plug the device in, attach it to the network, and install the included software. The software guides you through setup step by step. When everything is ready to go, it looks like a new hard drive has been installed on your PC and you use it just as you would any other hard drive. Backup software is included for users who don’t already have their own preferred software. Please note that the SC101 is only compatible with Windows machines and won’t work with Macs or Linux.

Outstanding Performance with Various Storage Options
The SC101 connects to your network via a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection for fast data transfers. When you connect two drives to the device, you have the option of having them “mirrored” or “spanned.” Mirrored storage lets you keep two copies of every file, one on each drive, so that everything is backed up in case of drive failure. When two drives are set to span, they appear as one volume so they are easy to work with and the device will automatically find your data across both drives.

The front panel has three LEDs to let you know the status of the power, hard disk and network at a glance. The NETGEAR SC101 Storage Central is backed by a 1-year warranty.

What’s in the Box
SC101 Storage Central, resource CD, power adapter, Ethernet cable, installation guide, SmartSync Pro Backup Software CD, and warranty/support information card.

Clank clank clank! It should bring a smile to remember those old days when we had to use a typewriter to type business letters and sales correspondence. Overnight, it seems, our typewriters morphed into bullet-speed word processors. Business networking tools have also evolved in recent years to offer us new and improved opportunities to greet and meet new prospects, keep in touch with clients, and to organize our contact lists. Let’s take a look at some of these new and widely used networking tools

A computer is a must for most businesses. Specialized contact management programs assist in several networking areas making prospecting and contact follow up easier. Programs such as ACT!, Goldmine, Maximizer, and Outlook have various features that stores and organizes our contact’s records and can help organize our networking schedules. Personally, I have used ACT! faithfully for the last seven years in business. I simply load the networking contact’s business card information into the ACT! program once I return from a networking event. The next time I need to send that contact a letter or make a call, their contact information instantly appears on my computer screen.

Other tools used by the new-age networker include PDAs- Personal Digital Assistants such as Palm devices. Use these tools to review saved notes containing detailed information about people you network with. It is possible to synchronize the notes and contact records that are stored in some PDAs with the contact software used in your desktop computer. An example would be ACT! This program will update your PDA with the last records installed and the PDA will do the same for your computer It’s as simple as a click of a button! Imagine how you can tighten a relationship by meeting a contact who has forgotten your name, however, with the aid of a PDA, you quickly search for that contact’s name and for a detailed note about who they are. It is also possible to set appointments and check schedules instantly at a networking event with the help of a PDA.

No matter how many space-age gadgets and tools we use to help with our networking, we should be very clear about the significance of one tool in particular. This tool is called trust and it is the core and foundation of networking. Use all of your networking tools to help build trust because without trust, there is really no relationship at all.

Discover and embrace today’s tools that are designed to help networkers become more successful. Use these tools to gain trust so that you can get the most from all of your networking activities!

In most structured networking groups, members have the opportunity to do a ten-minute presentation at their local chapter meeting to further educate their fellow members about their business, the types of leads they seek, their unique selling points and the ways in which members can assist them. The one-page business description can be used as an outline for this presentation.

In addition, the ten-minute presentation should contain ideas or directions regarding ways in which members can find leads for you or assist you in other ways. This portion of the presentation could contain information about the types of referral or strategic partners that would be best for you, what types of questions to ask to uncover leads, materials like discount coupons or free samples that could be shared to help generate first time customers, etc. Most members do a good job of describing their businesses but few do a good job of instructing others on how to help them. This portion of the presentation is extremely important, because your fellow members want to help with your business, but don’t always know how to help.

The purposes of your ten-minute presentation are to focus your chapter members on helping you and to provide them with the information they need to help you. Conclude your ten-minute presentation with a call to action or specific assignment that members can easily complete. For example, you could provide each member with coupons they can distribute to a specific target customer group with which they all have contact. Or, you could identify specific types of referral partners and ask members to think through their contacts and let you know if they know anyone fitting that description. The simplicity of these tasks increases the likelihood that your fellow members will complete them. The feeling of accomplishment resulting from their ability to fulfill the simple assignment will predispose them to take additional steps to help you.
